Lesta Garner

January 1, 1938 — December 31, 2019

Hamlin

Lesta Lynn Slack Garner received her heavenly reward on December 31st due to complications of recent illness. Although Lesta had beaten Cancer her body had become tired and wasn’t able to fight through this last hospital stay. We are grateful for the Lords mercy in seeing Lesta home when her burden had become more than she could bear.

Lesta was born on January 1st 1938 in Hitson, Texas to Alley Celeste Moore and Charles Rainey Slack. On April 21rd 1956 Lesta married the love of her life O.C. Garner. Together they raised 5 children Joseph Dean, Jimmy Callan, LaJeanna Celeste, Jayson Junior and Joanna Garner. Lestas greatest joy was her family she was also known as Nanny to her 20 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Lesta was a very hard workingwoman she worked several years at Teakwood Manor in Stamford Texas as a cook. She was a fantastic cook and if you didn’t get to try one of her many famous dishes you certainly missed out. Her grandchildren fondly remember her “Chicken and Dumplin’s”, “Super-dogs,” Goulash and Fried Burritos. Most of Lesta’s granddaughter’s kitchens are filled with the aroma of her prized recipes. After working several years at Teakwood Lesta went on to work at Green Thumb as a janitor at Hamlin Middle School for 3 years before working at the Hamlin Memorial Hospital. Lesta retired after 4 years at Hamlin Hospital. She was very beloved by her co-workers and friends.

O.C. Garner tells us his best memories of Lesta where the fantastic hamburgers she would make for him at the Whataburger in Abilene on Treadway when they started dating. He says the most important thing for us to remember about Lesta is he loved her and she was a good woman.

Lesta loved to fish and if she couldn’t go fishing she would happily dress up for a night of dancing on the town. Lesta was a very accomplished dancer and a favorite partner around the dance floor. Lesta will be remembered for her sharp wit and abundance of love readily available for any in need.

Lesta instilled a love of music in her family and has left a legacy of musicians. Some of her children’s fondest memories are listening to their parents pick guitars and sing.

Lesta is survived by her husband of 63 years O.C. Garner and her five children, Joseph Garner, Jimmy (Wanda) Garner, LaJeanna Patterson, Jayson (Patsy) Garner, and Joanna Garner and 4 brothers: Bob Slack, Callan Slack, Dean Slack and Bobby Brown.

Lesta is preceded in death by her parents Alley Celeste Moore and Charles Rainey Slack. A sister Lois LaDawna Slack and a brother Billy Perrin Moore. A daughter in law Theresa Garner a son in law Gordon Roberts and a grandson Callan James Garner. The family would like to say special thanks to Lesta’s granddaughters Kajsa and Savannah who both stayed many nights with her during her final days.
