Herbert Lakey

July 2, 1939 — March 4, 2021

Hamlin

Herbert Conrad Lakey - born July 2, 1939, to Boyd Herbert and Hartines Elaine (Donham) Lakey in Hamlin, Texas.  He passed away on March 4, 2021.  Herb attended Hamlin schools and graduated in 1957.  He was a good football player and was known as “Little Bull” by his teammates because of his tenacity in running with the ball as a fullback with the Pied Pipers.  Herb instilled a love for sports and the desire for competition at the highest level possible to his sons and grandchildren.  He loved to watch them play at all levels.

In 1958, Herb married the love of his life, Barbara.  They enjoyed almost 63 years together, raising and loving their family.  They had three sons that were the light of their lives.  He loved his children and grandchildren without equal.

Herb was a lifelong farmer and in 1964 he started in the spraying business with his good friend Horton Brandon.  Over the years Herb flew thousands of hours helping the farmers and ranchers of Texas feed and clothe the world.  In 2019 Herb was awarded the “Texas Operator of the Year” award from the Texas Agriculture Aviation Association.  He loved his customers and they loved him back.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Russ; and one sister, Louise.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons and daughters-in-law, Vance and Ursula, Brad and Laine;  sisters, Barbara Jean and Pauline; grandchildren, Kandra, Adree (and Brent), Wade (and Lane), Brittany, Samantha (and Tone), Shalaina, and Kimie (and Keenan); great-grandchildren, Cohen, Nekota, Hudson, Luke, Preston, Kurt, Nolan, and one in the hanger.

The family requests that memorials be made to Hamlin Church of Christ, Hendrick Hospice Care, or American Cancer Society.
