Charles Titus Sr.

August 24, 1945 — March 3, 2023

Charles Edward Titus, Sr., loving husband and father was called home by his heavenly Father on March 3, 2023 in Abilene TX surrounded by a host of family and friends.  Charles was born on August 24, 1945 to M.T. Titus and Yvonia Laura (Willis) Titus in Fairfield, TX.  In early childhood, Charles and his family moved from east Texas and relocated to the Texas Panhandle to the community of Quanah, TX.  After spending a few years there young Charles and his family eventually settled in West Central Texas in the rural community of Hamlin.  While living in Hamlin, Charles attended Oscar DePriest during segregation and excelled in track in long distance events.  Charles graduated and remained an alumni of Oscar De Priest and loved to share the stories of being one of the last graduating classes from an era when communities served their School.

Charles met the love of his life in 1966 in Hamlin at a local carnival that was passing through town.  This was the beginning of a relationship that lasted almost 50 years of matrimony through both good times and bad times.  Charles married Miss Elma Ree Mayes in Hamlin on September 21, 1974.  They moved to Abilene where Charles and Ree both lived and worked.  They welcomed their first son Charles Edward Titus, Jr. and another son Matthew Mayes Titus.

Charles loved life.  He was a sports enthusiast and loved watching the Dallas Cowboys and Las Angeles Lakers.  One of his greatest past times was going to watch and support area teams that reached the playoffs in football.  He spent many seasons on the road with his sons and other family members rooting especially for the Hamlin Pied Pipers and Abilene Eagles.

The greatest memory that Charles has left behind to cherish is his love and trust in the Lord.  He was a lifetime member of the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ un Hamlin TX.  He was a husband, father, brother, and uncle but most importantly a man who lived by Faith.  Although the tears may last for a while we can still smile knowing that as he was taken away from us he entered the enteral love of the Father to the words we all one day wish to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant”.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents M.T. and Yvonia Titus; maternal grandparents, Ector and Velma Willis.

Left to cherish his memory, his wife Elma Ree Titus of Abilene; two sons, Charles Edward Titus Jr, and Matthew Mayes Titus both of Abilene; twelve siblings, Grace Gilbert of Tulsa, Lena Lee of Hamlin, Lillie Brown and husband, Charles of Tulsa, Annie Titus of Hamlin, Shirley Titus of Anson, Clifford Titus of Mesquite, Reginald Titus and wife, Olivia of Hamlin, D.
