Hamlin

Almeta Estelle (Mizell) Young passed away on Saturday November 13, 2021. Services will he held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 17 at the First United Methodist Church of Hamlin. There will be a visitation prior to the service at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery directed by Adams-Foster-Ray Funeral Home.

Almeta was born September 5, 1924, in Abilene to Durward M. and Willie Mae (Flanigan) Mizell. Almeta graduated from Newman High School, now Sweetwater High School, in 1942. She attended Bethany Peniel College, now Southern Nazarene University. Almeta was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1945. She graduated Cum Laude in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics where she was Student Assistant to the Home Economics Professor. On August 1, 1948, she married Richard M. Young, Jr. Richard passed away on February 13, 2009. She has lived in Hamlin since marriage.

Almeta taught eleven years in Hamlin Elementary School. She served six times as President of Woman’s Literary Club, was president of Texas Federation Women’s Club Mesquite District from 1996 to 1998, was a member of Texas Retired Teachers, was a member of Hamlin First United Methodist Church from 1954 to death. Almeta taught Sunday School for over fifty years. She served as president of local United Methodist Women and was Treasurer of the Abilene District. She was active in Lay Witness Missions, Emmaus, and Gideons Auxiliary.

Almeta was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jackie Jean Underwood, and her husband.

She is survived by one sister, Dale Marie Springer.  One daughter, Jean Marie Jeffrey, and husband Ronnie Jeffrey; three grandchildren, Kyle Jeffrey and wife Kasey, Jessica Elder and husband John, and Luke Jeffrey and wife Sugey: seven great grandchildren; Dylan and Grayson Jeffrey, Katy, Brady and Case Elder, Jaxon and Emmy Jeffrey.
