Obituary

Sam Mack Hodges, 84, of Hamlin, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, in McKinney, Texas.

Born on March 8, 1942, in Hamlin to Sam and Verlon Hodges, Sam Mack was an only child who grew up on the family farm, where he learned the values of hard work, an appreciation for simple living, and the importance of family – principles that guided him throughout his life. Hamlin also gave him lifelong friendships with Ken Prewit, Dwight Griggs, and Cecil "Pinky" Sellers, friendships he cherished for decades.

After graduating from Hamlin High School, Sam Mack attended McMurry University before earning his degree from Texas Tech University. He began his career in sales before becoming a commodities broker, a profession that perfectly matched his love of people and the markets. Even after returning home to Hamlin, where he helped his father on the family farm, he remained an avid follower of the commodity and stock markets, always eager to discuss the markets and share his active trades.

On June 8, 1963, Sam Mack married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia "Bunny" Patterson. Together they built a loving home centered on faith, family, and friendship, raising four children—Missy, Kimi, Kyle, and Casey—in a home whose back door was always open.

Sam Mack never met a stranger. His outgoing personality, wit, and gift for storytelling made friends of everyone he met and brought laughter to every gathering.

He loved hunting, working on the farm, tinkering with cars, watching Texas Tech sports, and taking road trips. But above all, his favorite place was wherever family and friends had gathered. Weekend dinners with Poppa and Becca, Kathy and Paula Prewit, and the annual Labor Day dove hunts became treasured family traditions filled with stories and laughter.

Committed to his community, Sam Mack served as President of Hamlin Little League as well as Vice President of the Hamlin ISD School Board. He believed deeply in the importance of education and giving back to the town he loved.

More than anything, Sam Mack taught by example. Through his work ethic, kindness, and devotion to family, he showed his children and grandchildren that the greatest investment you can make is in the people you love.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bunny Hodges; his son, Kyle Hodges; and his parents, Sam and Verlon Hodges.

He is survived by his daughters, Missy Leps and husband Ed, and Kimi Hutson and husband Tom; his son, Casey Hodges and wife Amy; his grandchildren, Jack and Lee Leps, Jacob and Kyle Hutson, Megan and Wyatt Hodges, Grace Essex, and Palmer and Cole Hodges; along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 17, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Foster-Adams-Ray Funeral Home in Hamlin. A graveside service celebrating Sam Mack's life will be held Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Neinda Cemetery with Dr. Mike Stedham officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hamlin CISD, reflecting Sam Mack's lifelong belief that investing in young people is one of the greatest gifts a community can give.

Some people are remembered for what they accomplished. Sam Mack Hodges will be remembered for the people he loved, the stories he told, and the friendships he built over a lifetime. His legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the example he set, and the lives he touched. His was a life well lived, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
