Born February 21, 1931, in Cameron, Texas, James was the son of the late James C., Sr. and Rebecca Bass Mayes. He grew up in Aspermont, Texas, and resided there for 18 years, living with his uncle, Joe Bass. As a youth, he worked many jobs, either as a cook or as manual labor. He married Erma Lee Hunter on August 21, 1950, in Hamlin. James was a lifelong resident of Hamlin and worked at the Hamlin Compress. He enjoyed watching westerns, storytelling, helping in the community, and sharing his words of wisdom. James was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ, where he was affectionately known as Preacher.
James is preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, and one brother.
Survivors include his wife Erma Mayes of Hamlin, Texas five sons and daughtersinlaw, James, Jr. and Myra Mayes of Bardstown, KY, Joseph Earl and Kyoko Mayes of Corpus Christi, TX, Larry Joe and Dianna Mayes of St. Roberts, MO, Garry and JoNell Mayes of Abilene, TX, and Daryl Wayne and Mar Quit Mayes of Arlington, TX two daughters and sonsinlaw, Elma and Charles Titus of Abilene, TX, and Tommie and James Varney of Arlington, TX one sister, Pearlie Mae Mayes of Hamlin, TX: sixteen grandchildren sixteen greatgrandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
