James Franklin Covington, 91, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013, at his home in Hamlin. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Hamlin, with burial following at Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, ed by AdamsFosterRay Funeral Home. ation will be held from 6:007:00 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, at the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ.

James was born November 23, 1922 to Louis and Mattie White Covington in Brady, Texas. He attended the Oscar DePriest School in Hamlin before being drafted into the United States Army. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as an Antiaircraft Artillery Crewman from December of 1942 to January of 1946. On October 6, 1946, he married his lifelong love, Joyce Faye Brown, in Hamlin, Texas. He graduated from the Fairfield Barber College in 1955, and shortly afterward opened a barber shop in Hamlin, which he operated until his retirement in 1981. Upon retiring, he continued to work for Wade Trucking Company until 1996. He also served as pastor of a church in Anson for three years. In his spare time, James enjoyed Welding and Preaching about the Holy Ghost. He was an elder of the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, and a National AtLarge Member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxillary.

James is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Brenda Covington, four sisters Geneva, Mary Frances, Mattie Lee, and Lula Ann, five brothers Louis, Earl, Roosevelt, William, and Harden, and his special daughter Veronica Chase.

James is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce Faye Brown Covington of Hamlin sons Van Covington Frances of Tucson, Arizona, Jerry Covington Veronica of Grand Prairie, Ricky Covington of the Philippines, and Delger Covington of San Diego, California daughters Sandra Ross Jimmie of Dallas, Peggy Covington Davis of Hamlin, Marilyn Scott Nathan of Dallas, Sherry Boyd Andrew of Hamlin, Tonya Covington of Cedar Hill, and Starlet Covington of Surprise, Arizona Special daughters Geneva Shelton Neal Shawn of North Carolina and Monica Chase Roberts Walter of San Antonio 23 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.
