HamlinGabie May Smallwood Hawkins, 90, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012, in Abilene. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2012 at AdamsFosterRay Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, ed by AdamsFosterRay Funeral Home. ation will be 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 12, 2012, at the funeral home.
Born January 1, 1922, in Plainview, Gabie was a daughter of the late Lewis B. and Ethel Black Smallwood. At the young age of nine Gabie lost her mother. Her father married Zoe who helped raise her. She received her Bachelors of Art from McMurry College. Gabie married Elmer John Hawkins June 19, 1943, in Crosbyton. They moved to Hamlin in 1949, then to Stamford in 1972 and Rotan in 1983. She retired in Ruidoso before moving to Abilene in 2006. Gabie was a very active member of the Methodist Church and was President of the United Methodist Women. She also was past president of the T.J.H.C Medical Alliance. Gabie enjoyed knitting, working crossword puzzles, and loved playing bridge. Gabie also helped organize various fundraisers.
Gabie is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son Jonathan Hawkins.
Survivors include one son and daughterinlaw, James and Beejae Hawkins of Frisco two daughters and soninlaw, Louann and Warren Trull of Abilene and Sharon Gustafson of Lubbock six grandchildren, Taris S. Hawkins and wife, Estee, James Hawkins and wife, Sara, Robert Bullock and wife, Nicole, Mark Bullock and wife, Gretchen, Zoanna McCord and husband, James and Eric Gustafson five greatgrandchildren cousin Frank Wallace and wife, Lois nephew, Timothy C. Hawkins and a cousin who was raised with her, Lucille Wallace Slater.
