Billy Carter

January 23, 1933 — March 3, 2026

Billy Glenn Carter, beloved father and Papaw, passed away peacefully at his home on March 3, 2026, at the age of 93. Born on January 23, 1933, in Jones County, Texas, Billy lived a life rich in memories, laughter and kindness. Throughout his years, he became a cherished friend and family member to many.

Billy was a standout basketball player at McCaulley High School, where he met and later married his sweetheart and bride of 72.5 years, Lucille Smart. In January of 1953, after their marriage, Billy left for boot camp and then spent two years stationed in Korea with the United States Army. Upon his return home, Billy and Lucille bought a farm in Jones County and began their legacy of farming and raising cattle. He worked to support the farm by working at Celotex Gypsum Plant for 22 years before leaving and going to work at National Gypsum in Rotan for another 23 years before retiring.

He is remembered fondly for his great sense of humor, his love of storytelling and a good joke, his willingness to always help someone in need, and his love for his bride, his family and friends.

Those who remain to carry on his legacy are his children: Laura and husband Bob Hall of Potosi, Texas; John and wife Robie Carter of Hamlin, Texas; and Cindy and husband Tony Benavides of Idalou, Texas. He is survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses: Ryan Hall; Ranie and Chris Tilley; Brandon and Katie Hall; Shelby and Ryan Wright; Bradley and Courtney Carter; Alesha Winegeart; and Bryce Benavides, as well as sixteen great-grandchildren and spouses: Rylee Hall; Brody Hall; Kadence Hall; Micah Hall; Katelyn Tilley and Beau Campbell; Michaela and Christopher Adkins; Pyper Tilley; Paisley Hall; Stoker Hall; Everly Hall; Jo Anna Wright; Elijah Carter; Mattie Winegeart; Stetson Winegeart; Clara Winegeart; Carter Winegeart, with one great-great grandson, Kolby Campbell, and another great-great grandson on the way. Billy is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Lorene Dowell and Laverne and Butch Glass, plus a host of numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Billy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Carter, his parents, Glenn and Alma (Hulsey) Carter, and his siblings, Geneva Patton and Milton Carter. His legacy of hard work, undying love, kindness and commitment to family and friends will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
